Hello folks,


Ive got a 1949 Chevrolet 3100 pickup that has decided to quit starting since last weekend. Things Ive done:
checked for fresh gas
checked fuel at carb coming through fuel filter
replaced battery (6V)
replaced coil
replaced condenser
replaced pos bat cable
checked voltage through high tension cable into distributor
cleaned up wiring on ignition switch
charged new battery after running it down trying to start
Thoughts?

 

are you getting spark at the plugs? So lucky to not be fighting a computer! Just need fuel, spark, air

 

Does it still have the original distributor with points? If so check the points and condenser. Reset the point gap.

 

Do a voltage check at the '+' side of the Coil. Should be 6v with ign on.
If so, and you're getting spark, try squirting a little Fuel into the Carb.
You might pull #1 Plug, and rotate engine to see if you get a squirt of air on/near the timing mark.
IF so, check Distributor and see that the Rotor is pointing toward #1 cylinder.
Check wire firing order, you just may have crossed a couple unintentionally.

 

It arcs between the wire and the plug ( and zaps me), but it seems weak to me although i dont have a frame of reference for a 67 y o 6volt system

 

Yes and ok ill try that- i havent replaced points or reset- just coil and condenser

On a Coil shock, I don't think one can tell the difference between 6 n 12vdc after the windings !

Tell us what voltage you're getting on the Coil.
You didn't accidently buy a 12vdc Coil did you ?

Dwell is 30° for an 8 cylinder, or, you can just get the points on high cam, and if there's any clearance at all, it will probably be good enough to start. (10K") is good enough.
