Question 86 K10 with Gov lock

Im a new member so go easy on me. I have an 86 k10 and it has the 8.5 10 bolt 2.85 rearend with a "Gov lock" locker. The locker malfunctioned, and the spider gears ripped themselves apart. I'm wanting to put a new locker in but from what I've researched it seems like I have to put an open diff carrier in to use a different style locker, such as a spartan lunchbox (Light to mild offroad use, it's a toy). If I pull the carrier out and swap it for an open diff style, do i have to reset the ring and pinion spacing ie backlash? Also I'm planning on making it a 4.10 instead of the 2.85 down the road, will the new carrier and locker I'm planning on getting for the 2.85 be compatible with a 4.10 ring and pinion or do I have to get one specific for the 4.10? Sorry for such a long post, this is the first forum I've ever joined and not 100% on how to go about asking questions.

Might be easier to just grab an entire rear end at the junkyard.

Well I have a spare 12 bolt but I'd have to change the gearing to match what's in there now, then again to a 4.10 down the road. I guess what I really need to know is if I have to gauge the rack and pinion if I swap the carrier.
