Default swap a 350 to a v6- 82 van?

I was considering buying a 1982 chevy van/bus with a 350 in it. I was wondering if I can put a more fuel efficient motor in it, like a v6 or something smaller that would still have enough power to put the van into motion. It looks more like a bus than a van. It has the vertical "school bus" doors in the front and the area behind the driver seat is 12 ft long. Is a 350 to v6 conversion common? Is there maybe a diesel motor i can put in it?

Thanks,
Frank

Frank,
To put in a 4.3 would given the wt of your vehicle would be taking a backward move. With today's tech on EFI systems for 350's,I suggest that is a area you should explore.Tons of conversion kits out there to improve gas mileage.
