Default Transmission Dipstick tube

Hi. I'm working on a 1984 Chevy G30 Hi cube van that sat a very long time. Right now I need to change the transmission dipstick tube. (TH400 trans) The original goes all the way to up under the hood, and is around 60 inches long.
Here's my question: Would it matter if I replace it with a much shorter tube (and stick)? I would have to check the level from under the doghouse, but that's no big deal. I ask because I've searched hard and I cant find an original replacement part. Should I just go with a short one that the parts house says it will fit my vehicle?
Thanks for your input
Chuck

If you go with the shorter one, are you going to be able to reach it easily to check your fluid level?

Yes, no problem there. This vehicle has a van front end; I will have to open the doghouse (engine cover) to reach the dipstick, but that's not something I will need to do often.
What I am hearing is that the original long tube is for convenience sake and that the short one will be accurate if I dont mind having to open the doghouse.

That's a decision only you can make. If you are ok with removing the cover to check the oil, then go for it.
