Default 1986 expected mpg?

New here...Just bought for my 19yo to use.

2.8L, 4x4, automatic.

What should I expect for the mpg. Son has complained its eating gas. Ive filled it up and will do a calculation probably tommorrow. What should I expect to see.

Side quesiton. Is this a typically loud engine? If mileage is that bad Ive thought it may be stuck in 4wd. Shifter on floor shows its in 2wd soIm going to look at that as well.

Thanks for anyones help.

I've got a '85 s10 tahoe 4x4, 2.8L with 700r4 trans, and 4.10 gears. I eats a bit of gas, i get probably 18-20 mpg right now, but needs carb work and tune up. Check that the front axle is not engaged, the cable should be pushed in all the way. at a stop, turn it all the way into the corner and give it gas, to a couple circles and it will definately start hopping if it is locked in. Otherwise, it might just need a bit of a tune up.

As far as the engine being loud, mine wasn't till i worked on the exhaust and probably popped the seals between the engine and manifold or the manifold and pipe. What exhaust does it have?
