Default 2.2L gas mileage

Hi, I have a 99' 2.2L automatic 2wd S-10 with a standard cab and short box. I would like to know what i should expect for fuel mileage. I have calculated it at 19mpg to 20mpg on a good day. I can understand it would be low because it seems slightly underpowered, but this seems rediculous for a 4 cyl motor. Thanks for the help.

hello sullivki, i would try a few things to improve your milage, a full tune up - air in tires - fule injector cleaner.
to other things i can think of are, egr valve clogged from carbon build up, a common problem.
or a clogging cat converter.
