Default 2000 S-10 - no pickup speed, now losing speed

I have a 2000 S-10, 4.3 ltr engine, 4×4 auto trans. with about 60,000 miles on it. When I push the throttle almost to the floor - the engine will not pick up speed. When I push the throttle slowly - it's better but still slow to pick up speed.
Now it has started losing power when driving normally down the road. I hate to drive it in town now. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? I am asking for my 83 year old Dad, who is a mechanic but this has him stumped. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

if the engine is running properly it could be a faulty torque convertor stator. the stator may not be holding and this effects fluid flow thru the convertor. Just make sure you don't have an engine problem first..ie clogged cats...low fuel pressure. runs these ideas past your father...he is there so maybe he can pick up on something. good luck

I'd look at replacing the fuel filter.

I was thinking fuel filter too. Partially clogged from the sound of it. Passing enough fuel to pick up speed slowly or maintain speed but not enough to pass or go uphill without losing speed.
