Default '87 s10 pickup question

Hi all...My dad has an 87 s10 pickup and for some reason he can't pick up any radio stations. I swapped out the unit with a am/fm cd player with a usb port. everything works just fine....except it still wont pickup ANY radio stations. Yes, the antenna cable is plugged into the back of the unit. My dad also put on a new antenna...still no radio stations will come in...not even AM!!! We thought about replacing the antenna wire, but my dad said he cant figure out how to remove the old one. (Not the one from the radio that goes through the firewall...the one from the antenna itself, that meets the wire that runs through the firewall). I gust gave it a quick look and it looks like you have to take the right fender off...does that make sense?

The antenna wire is apparently broken. I had an 85 S10 and I added an antenna. It didn't have factory radio and I added it myself. I did not have to remove the fender. Don't remember exactly how I did it, but I was able to get the wire into the hole in the firewall where the antenna was supposed to go.

Thanks oldchevy. I'll have to look at it closer, didn't really have time yesterday. I was replacing the exhaust for him, and just gave it a quick look while taking some "time off" from under the truck.
