Default Air injection pump

I have a 2000 Blazer with the 4.3V6 engine and 4 wheel drive. The service engine light keeps coming on and the code says there is a secondary air injection problem. I can disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes and re-connect the cables and the service engine light will stay off for a day or two or may stay off for a few weeks before coming back on. The Blazer runs fine when the light is on. I can tell no difference in performance. How can I get the engine light to stay off without changing out the pump?
I tried disconnecting the wires to the pump but this caused the service engine light to come on immediately. Or --- is this illegal or a bad idea??

Thanks or any help.

It won't pass inspection like that.
The pump will most likely need to be changed before you get it inspected.

We don't have inspection in Indiana but I think I'll replace it anyway. Thanks for the response.
