Default 1985 S10 Blazer Air Injection Pump

Hi, the air injection pump on my 1985 S-10 Blazer 2.8L V6 is in need of replacement. Is it absolutely mandatory to replace this air pump or can I just remove it? Will I cause any damage to the catalytic converter by not having the air injection pump?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
