Default Auto Trans. backup light switch

You have to move the column shifter up and down within the reverse position to get the backup lights to come on. Is there an adjustment of the switch possible or is the switch just worn?

Well Kevin is correct. I have a Chevy pickup with a manual tranny. The backup lights only come on one out of ten times. Transmission is smooth as silk, but the mechanism inside just doesn't push the switch down hard enough to light up the reverse light switch most times. Its 20 years old so I just put a switch on the dash,
if I need the reverse lights.

I am sure not gonna pull a perfectly good transmission and 4x4 transfer case, for a simple problem like that.

True. In the manual transmission the reverse switch is located on the side of the tyranny. I put a new one in, but it made no difference. Whatever hits the end of the switch, which is a chrome plated ball, just doesn't engage it all the time. Thought about grinding down the housing so the switch would hit it, but to heck with that.

I am not sure where the backup light switch is on an automatic. Under the shift lever, or on the steering column, I suppose.
