Default Automatic 02 s10 with jerky rpms

My s10 recently started making a forward jerk motion when driving a steady speed, normally around 60 to 65mph on the highway. The rpms will jump up a small ways and fall back down repeatedly for a while. I'll either give it a little gas or let off the gas and it will fall out of the jerk motion. I am a first year automotive technology student and I would like to know how to fix this problem on my truck. I believe I should give my spark plugs a look because I bought the vehicle used back in July and have no record of their last maintenance. I was told it may have something to do with my engine wires or coils or the throttle position sensor as well but I figured I'd check a Chevrolet forum to try and find any useful help or similar problems first.
