Short answer -- oil remains in the system -- to best of my knowledge.

My last A/C work was 6 years ago on a Dodge Caravan. I hit a big bump and A/C quit cooling ... recycled the system and it was good as new.

I was headed on down to Texas and decided to have it checked to be on safe side. I found a great mechanic at a small garage in Arkansas. He said only way to check for proper amount of R-134a in system was to vacuum the system and weigh the refrigerant.

He pumped everything out of system ... except the oil ... and my system didn't require any refrigerant. He put it back in and I never had another A/C problem with that van.

The neatest part was this fellow charged me $29. I'm not rich but I gave him an extra $20, and still felt like I was cheating for the effort he put forth.

Incidentally, the vacuuming process will also remove moisture from the refrigerant, as well as any other debris.
