Default help ID'ing exhaust part

2000 S10 LS 4.3 Vortec V6 4x4...see pic below of my exhaust system as it exits the headers....can someone tell me what the circled item w/the ??? marks is called and its function? It is welded to the assy..and...can it be cut out & replaced w/a short straight pipe w/o disrupting what the O2 sensors are telling the truck's ECU/PCM/BCM?

since no one ever answered this, I recently found out this is what is called a "precat", and is only found on California emissions legal built trucks(how this vehicle ended up in NE PA is beyond me)...and from what I've read, I guess its only function is to heat exhaust fumes faster in cold start conditions, thus lower'n exhaust pollution sooner...consider this thread solved/closed
