If you have a Check Engine Light that's on check for the problem code.
You should also look at getting yourself a repair manual like the Haynes book at least. It will help you out how to check the codes for OBD1 system.

Well you might start with the standard tune up things :

cap
rotor
plugs and wires
fuel filter
air filter
etc.

You initially said that you drove it down a hill twice, then your husband drove it up and had problems with it. Does it only do this when you work it or will it do it when it isn't working hard?
I ask cause that would seem more like a bad plug or bad timing.
Like golfer said basic tune up sort of things.
