Nothing to do with the cold as you will find out ... it's a very common GM problem... just like your ball joints.
There's talk that the Dexcool that GM uses is a contributing cause to gaskets biodegrading.

Btw...msjoni that ruling is only applicable in the province of Quebec doesn't necessarily have the same results nation wide.

 

I have a question on the Idler arm. I'm trying to replace the Idler arm on a 2000 S10 (RWD) and I'm having trouble loosening the nut that connects the Idler arm to the Relay rod. When I turn the nut to loosen it, the stud from the Relay rod turns with it. I tried to grip the stud with vise grips but there isn’t meat there for is to clamp on to. Any help on how to stop the Stud from moving would help. Thanks.

 

Use a nut splitter to cut the nut. The new idler arm will have a good stud and a new nut. That's also the whole reason you're replacing that piece. It's worn out. It's a fairly simple task. Ball joints are another thing, to remove the old ones, you can use a 5lb hammer and persuade them out, but you'll need a ball joint press to reinstall them. take care not to scratch the spindle for your brakes and be glad you don't have 4WD.
