We just bought a used f150 for my son (its his first vehicle) so I figured what better way to have his first accident than in a ford lol
Well fate is a ***** when hes running with destiney.
my wife let my son drive her 96 4wd blazer to wally world. straight there and right back(yeah sure)
he mad a circle and on one of the turns he spun and hit the curb broke the driver side rear axel, blazer was sitting on the wheel on top of the curb. 110 for towing. we just spent 800 for the f150 and getting it legal and safe. dont really have the cash for this repair so am looking for used. that leads to my queations( i will probably buy a chiltons but thought i would start here)
1) i need to verify my axle size 7.58 or 8
....there are 10 bolts if that helps
2) would a 1998 rear axel shaft and associated parts fit my 96?
As far as i can see we need axel brakes dust sheild and a rim plus bearings. and some driving experience for my son.
3) is this a "tricky" job or is it slide it out and slide it in or is it like ford front lockouts where you have to spin and stand on your head and hold your mouth in a perfect square so the parts line up?
...can a weekend warrior do this?

any info and instruction would be greatly appreciated

May want to check at the local salvage yards for the parts. You can find some great parts for really cheap. The 98 should fit your S10 without any problems. Its not too hard of a job, but if its a vehicle thats up north or ever has spent time up north....you may want to have a strong set of tools and a long metal pipe to put over your wrenches that you can use as a breaker bar......rust is a b*tch

 

1drummer ... did you sort out which rear-end you have? I recently changed lube in my 04 S-10 and went to store for fluid and gasket. Clerk asked if I had 7.5 or 8.5 inch differential ... I had no idea and got both gaskets since they were only around $3 each.

Regarding instructions ... I have a service manual ... post a response if you still need.

 

cool its the 7.5 so i will start dismanteling this sunday i hope and well go from there can you scan and email the pages in the serv manual?
