Exclamation Problem with 97 S-10 LS

So I'm the proud owner of a 97 chevy s-10 LS, recently it's been having problems. I just had to replace the battery since the last one died completely, after a while it wouldn't start up and when it did sometimes it'd cut off, found the negative cable had worked itself loose from the battery, tightened it and it was perfect. The other day I was leaving for work, it cut off in the driveway, just completely shut off and everything. Came back on a minute later then died again at the end of my driveway. Had my brother over one day and he cranked it up and said he could smell gas when he got out of the car.

Any idea what this could be? He said it's most likely the fuel pump/injector/filter which could also be why I'm having bad gas mileage. Does this sound like it could be the problem? Is it expensive to replace?

Turned out to be a loose battery cable.
