SOUNDS LIKE A VACUUM PROBLEM. A VACUUM LEAK WILL CAUSE HIGH IDLE, FUNKY SHIFTING, AND DIFFICULT STARTING. DID YOU REMOVE ANY VACUUM LINES? OLDER AUTOMATICS USED TO HAVE A VACUUM MODULATOR THAT WAS FED FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. I DONT KNOW IF THEY STILL HAVE THAT, BUT I WOULDNT BE SUPRISED.<IMG src=smileys/smiley14.gif border="0">

Check to see if your intake manifold is cracked. This could cause high idling and rapid gear shifting. I had the same problem on my 88 S-10. Also, check the vaccum lines as previously stated.
