Starter not engaging

I have a 2001 chevy s-10 extreme 2.2 liter, when I try to start it I can hear the starter spinning but it's not engaging the flywheel.Do I need a new starter?

The starter bendix probably has a bad spring. I'd pull the starter, and look at it. They can be replaced or replace the whole starter.

Yes, the bendix gear is bad.
