Default Temp. Gauge

I have an 1989 S-10 2w\d 4.3 V6. The temp gauge will not work. It sets on about 110 deg. all the time, I checked the wire on the sensor. It wasent hooked up at first so I pluged it up and then it went up to 260 deg. and the checkgauges light came on. I think the sensor might need to be replaced, just wanting to make sure first. Also, my friend has a 94 silveraldo c1500 I think. It has the V8 but I cant remember how many liters. Anyway, his wants to almost choke out when its first started. It takes about 10 min for it to get lined out after ya get in and get started down the road. We put a new idle sensor in it yesterday but it didnt work. Any ideas?
