My 1956 Chevy Belair barn find (pictures)
Hello all! My name is Tony, im 20 years only from a small town in California. I wanted to come on here and tell you guys my story about how I acquired my 1956 Chevy Belair 2 door post. My grandparents owned a couple acres of land where they lived, every time I visited them I would wonder to the back corner of that 3 acres of pasture. Tucked behind some trees was a tent that was covering a car. At the time I had no idea what I was looking at. As I got older I (Around 13 yrs old) I asked my grandpa what type of car it was and how he got it. He told me what it was, he said back in his day he was part of the California Chevy club. While in the Chevy club he bought a 55 Belair, 54 Chevy 5 window truck and that 56 Belair. He daily drove the 55 he bought because it ran like a top, straight six purred. He didn't have time to work on the 54 truck and 56 Belair so he wheeled them into the back field and let them sit. Now before you get upset, no the truck and the Belair did not run, as far as I knew it had engine problems. When I was 16 my grandpa pulled me aside and informed me that he transferred the title of the car into my name, I was ecstatic, not knowing what to do with myself. I then realized that the reason he transferred it into my name was due to the decline in his health. I think he came to the realization that he no longer was going to be able to work on it. He told me "its yours, take care of it, Promise me at least one ride in it" and I did. That summer I worked on that car every day to get it to the point of being pulled out. Every tire was as flat as could be. Had to rip those off, buy some new 5 lug steelys with rubber and put them on. The engine was a 265 and it would crank over and run but tranny wouldn't go into gear, we knew at some point we would rip the engine and tranny out. We ended up having to hook it to a tractor and pull it out. We loaded it up on the trailer and towed it home. The interior was all black diamond tuck, as you see in the pictures is how it looked when we pulled it out of the field, so obviously I had suspicions it was redone at some point. When we got it home I pulled the engine and tranny out, and built a SBC 350 from the block up and threw a brand new turbo 350 tranny behind it. Got new Tires and rims, did some needed suspension work and some interior work (new carpet, ect..). I still wasn't satisfied yet. When we pulled it from the field it had the typical 2 tone blue front and whit back. Im young so I dont have $10k+ to spend on a paint job. I wanted to stand out but didn't know what to do. I was scrolling through social media one day and scrolled upon Smokey Yunicks 1955 chevy Belair (photos attached). I fell in love with the old nascar look. So I got together with my dad and came up with a plan. He is a incredible artist, so in a day we painted the car a sea-foam greenish color and my dad did all the letering on the car. Everything you see is what he did with a paintbrush and some paint. I think he killed it. So thats how it sits now. I was fortunate enough to give my grandpa one last ride before he passed soon after. I will hold and cherish that memory forever.... I am torn what to do next with the car. Thats why Im coming to yall for some advice. I have always wanted to drag race as a little kid. I fell in love with the oldschool gasser look, nose high, tubbed rear end, and a blower peaking out of the hood. I also like the classic look, all restored. If you were in my shoes what would you do? Gasser or original classic? If you want to watch the progress of my build please feel free to check out me youtube channel at this link -->
. I have already uploaded one video of the car so you can see it a little better than in pictures. Again Im 20 years old and dont know everything about cars, I am open to criticism and knowledge. So please share! If you have any questions about the car or in general, ask away I would love to have a conversation. All of the photos attached below are either when it was just pulled from the field or current phots of it. Thank you for reading!
