Default 1997 Chevrolet Diesel?

I'm getting 300KM's to a $70 tank on my s10 and I figured I'd upgrade to a bigger truck for the same fuel economy lol.

Here's the ad.

1997 Chevy 2500 diesel - Calgary Cars For Sale - Kijiji Calgary Canada.

240 000 engine KM's, new tranny and a new starter. I've always like the 97 and below style chevy's. I'd buy a 2005, but they are out of my price range. Some questions.

I think this is the 6.5, but I'm not sure. If it is:

How long do these engines last?
Any major problems with other parts of the trucks?
What is the fuel economy like? (I'm mainly highway KM's)
Are there any major repairs coming up for the engine? Price ranges?
Do they sound nice straight piped?
Can you chip these trucks?

If you think it's a different motor, same questions just on the different motor (6.2 maybe?)

If all checks out I may buy it. New to the forums but not to chev. Always been a chev guy. Had a dodge, hated it. Burnt and dripped oil, transfer case blew, terrible on gas but loved the sound. I like my s10 better with a half assed cherry bomb on it lol.

Thanks guys!

It would be the 6.5....I had a 1995 with the 6.5 Turbo...ran real well, but the BIG problem area was the ELECTRONIC fuel pump. Mine was replaced twice within 80,000 miles (under warranty). Maybe they got it solved by 1997?? Mileage was in the 22/23 mpg range on the highway. It was 4WD, but with stock size tires. I now have a 2005 2500HD with the DURAMAX/Allison drive train, which is giant improvement over the 6.5 Turbo. Gets 24 mpg on highway and 17-18 mpg city. It's 2WD. If you can, try for a 2001 or newer with the much better diesel/tranny.

Well i only have about 8 000 to spend. I dont mind doing fuelpumps, just concerned on the life of the engine an how much it may have left.
