Default 89 1500 starting problems

I just joined this sight and I am looking for insight on my problem so i dont go spending money on parts i dont need.
My problem: When i go to turn the key thier is a horendous noise like a loud screech. I then have to keep trying to turn the key till it stops doing this. Sometimes it will start on the first turn but it is getting worse. Is this the starter going bad? This is the first thing i thought of. If you need more detail just ask and i can try to explaine better.
thanks, andy

It sounds like the gear teeth on the flywheel is bad. Time to replace the flywheel. Lots of work.

I suggest that you pull the starter and examine the flywheel teeth to verify.

i just bought an 88 1500 longbed 4wd had the same problem your bendix on your starter is not going in all the way and hanging up on the flywheel or flexplate could be as easy as changing the starter

Is it making the noise when you turn the ignition on without turning the key to crank?
If so it could be the fuel pressure regulator, the pump comes on as soon as you turn the ignition on and will shut off when it builds pressure.
