As the title states...when i put my '94 z71 into 4 low or high it starts smoking. I can see it come into the cab from the steering column as well as watch it roll up from under the hood by the windshield. Any thoughts on what the cause might be?

weird... are you driving at this time? As you know where there is smoke... usually there is fire. My guess would be check fuse block under the hood for melted wires and in dash harness.

What if you just put it into 4 and let it sit. Keeping it in park
does it still smoke?
Is it white, bluish, or black smoke?

I beleive the 4wd is electrically controlled,probably a solenoid burning up. These give a lot of trouble.

Is there any smell, If so try pulling the fuse to the 4x4 system. If there is a short then pulling the fuse should eliminate the problem,and the smoke.
