Default 95 Z71 drive train component question

Hello guys,

My son bought his first vehicle over the weekend and I have a couple of questions for those of you who know more than me.

What is the best way to determine what drive train components are in this truck?

I need to determine which of the following components I have:

Transmission: 4L60-E or 4L80-E

Transfer case: NP241, NP243, BW4470, BW1370, or BW4401

Rear Diff: 8.5, 8.6, 9.5, or 10.5 ring gear

Does the torque converter on this model have a drain plug?

Thanks for your help

look in the glove box at the rpo codes. check google, there are some sites on what the codes actually mean.

anyways 95 1/2 ton will be 8.5 ring gear 10 bolt rear, 4l60e trans, dont know on the transfer case. gears will either be 3.42 or 3.73 most likely. gt4 code= 3.73, gu6= 3.42, and gt5= 4.10.

good luck

A 4L60E tranny has a drain plug on the pan. A 4L80E does not have a plug.

Generally the 1500(1/2 ton) has the 4L60E. The Z71 has a posi-rear, as per the last poster's notes, check that same "Service Parts Identification " sticker inside the glovebox for that "Z71" code. Then you can start narrowing it down from there.

Thanks for the tips guys,

So far I have figured out that it has an NP241C transfer case from the tag on the TC. From the RPO codes, I determined for sure that it has a 4L60E tranny, an LSD, and 3.42 diffs. What I don't see is the Z71 code. I assume that it would be on this SPI label as well. If the truck has a LSD, would that indicate Z71?

Also, does the torque convertor on a 4L60E have a drain plug?

no, G80 is the code for the locking diff. and the z71 package does not automatically come with a locking diff. z71 package is mainly shocks, skid plates, and stickers. if your rpo code does not say Z71 then you dont have the package.

good luck

Wink

OK, that is what I thought. It definately does not have the Z71 RPO code, but it does have the stickers. For a 16 year old, that is really all that matters anyhow.
