Default engine question

Hi,
I am wondering if someone can tell me the difference between the 4.3 engine and a 5.3AFM. My thinking is a 4.3 is like cars 4 cylinder engine, little power but good gas mileage.

The 5.3afm (worst there is) is like a V-8 engine, plenty power but not to good on gas. Hopefully someone can enlighten me.

the 4.3 is a v6, good motor for a regular cab shortbed truck. The 4.8 is a v8 that doesn't have the AFM crap. We have a 4.8 in a work truck. great on gas, runs like a dream with 250000miles. Good power to. 5.3 can be a good motor. Delete AFM and buy a new cam for certain year models. 6.0 is the best, but I am biased. That pretty much covers Chevy motors from 2000-2010. Minus the 8.1, don't get a 8.1.

NauticStar87, thanks for the response.

The 5.3L I think would be the engine for the crewcab but, with known existing lifter/camshaft problems and GM not wanting to help those who have had those issues. I am going to trade for the F-150 2014. Maybe after GM Silverado sales start to decline because of this issue GM will make adjustments if it's not to late.

thanks again NauticStar

The 4.3L V6 is essentially an old-school 5.7L (350) V8 with two cylinders shaved off.

The 4.8L and 5.3L are V8 engines that are typically used in the Silverado 1500 (half-ton) pickup trucks. The 6.0L is generally found in the 2500 HD (3/4-ton) Silverado, but there are a handful of them in some 1500 series trucks.

JK23112 I wish they still had the 350 that was a good engine.

Yes, the 350 small-block is legendary -- but the 5.3L that replaced it is probably just as good. The basic design dates all the way back to 1955, when Chevy released the 265 V8. Sixty consistent years is a great track record. The 283, 307, 327, 350 and 400 (small block) are all derived from it.

The 5.3L has the 'coil on plug' ignition (no distributor cap) and might breathe a little bit better than its predecessor, but it is the same 'old-school' pushrod torque monster.
