Default '02 E-brake and splash shield replacement

Hello,
Thanks for the replies in advance. I just registered on the recommendation of a friend with a Silverado.
I have an '02 4x4 half ton. I need to replace one rear e-brake shoe, and both splash shields. It looks like I can remove the shoe (and hopefully the broken clip bolt) without removing the axle; but it also looks like I need to pull the axles to replace my rusted away dust shields. Is this the case?
If so, are the axles held in similar to the old Chevy's, with a c-clip in the differential? Seems like a lot of work to replace the shields; but I have 110,000 on the truck now, and don't plan on giving it away for hopefully another 100,00 or so.

Thanks,
Dave

The axles are held in place with c-clips. I'm unsure if you have to remove them to change the shields.
