Default 1989 K1500 4 wheel drive will not engage

Yesterday I shifted the 4WD to 2WD but it didn't disengage and I traveled about 10 miles before I noticed the light was still on. I stoped, backed up a few feet and the light went off. Today it will not engage and the light on the floor shifter is not coming on.
Where do I start to try and fix my mistake?
Thanks.

if its a switch that operates the four wheel drive you might try checking the solenoid. if its a Shift lever than try checkin the linkage for play.

Thanks for the reply. It is a floor shifter and no play in linkage. I crawled under it yesterday and noticed that the passenger side cv joint is pulled away from the center chunck (pumpkin) not sure what you call it but it's out about 2 inches???

Definately fix the CV. How does the 89 engage in 4x4? Does it have a motor? Or is it mechanical? If it has a motor, that is probably where your problem lies.

It has a motor. Would it still engage with the cv joint issue?

My guess would be that you have a motor issue. The CV should not have anything to do with the motor engaging.I would get the GM part number and search for a GM or AC Delco part. This is not a good part to go aftermarket with.I have found a lot of parts by doing a google search for a GM part number.A lifetime warranty part looses it's appeal about the 2nd time you truck won't go into 4x4 when you need it to. Who cares if it's cheaper and they will give you a new one free when you're stuck?

Thanks. I am putting it in the shop next week to have cv joint repaired and 4x4 system checked. I appreciate the info.
