i own a 1990 silvy Z71. my advice, take the cat off and run a super40 flowmaster muffler. if you want true duals, you can keep the cat out the picture, but run the pipe like the stock y-pipe with 2 mufflers side by side then split them off to however you want to do it.
i have to run my cat still since im in CA, but i have a super40 series flowmaster on mine w/ cutoffs right at the muffler. if you want it to be loud, my setup works. i set off car alarms in parkings lots as i drive by them lol.

On my 1996 2500, my exhaust runs like true duals into a dual in single out muffler. I'm gonna have that muffler replaced with two Dynomax Bullets and have two tailpipes run out the side like Millie Racer 69s truck. Provided your system is the same stock, you could do the same thing, just without the Bullets. Mines a 454 truck, though, so it might be different.

I have true duals on my truck too, but it is also a 454 model. The pipes were run along the passenger side of the truck, and then split back out to the proper sides after the gas tank, but they never come together (hence, true duals). I have flowmaster 40 series (original) mufflers, and a catalytic converter on each pipe. It's not the loudest around here, but it certainly has the best tone in the area. All these kids with the idiotically loud trucks annoy me when they think their truck sounds good, when they don't even know what it is. Tone is much MUCH better than loudness, in my opinion.

By the way, if you run the exhaust along the passenger side of the truck, the drivers side pipe will be a good bit longer than the passenger pipe. I'm not entirely sure how this affects performance or sound.

Here is a video of my truck:

thats why i like my setup. its loud and has good tone. i cant stand trucks/cars that are just noise with no tone. plus ive been looking into putting a cam in my truck to make it sound even better =)
