Default 1990 350 tbi to vortec cpi 350 build

hey guys, im new here but hoping you can give me a hand. Im a certified mechanic and ive been building motors for years but never really ran into a project like this one before. The truck im working on is a 1996 K1500 that had a 350 vortec cpi. that blew up so the previous owner had a junkyard motor put in. come to find out, it was a 305 cpi vortec. no problem there. then he spun a rod bearing and destroyed the crank. He has limited money to play with so cannot afford another crank. at my shop we have a 350 tbi from a 1990 k1500. I am trying to use that block and crank and rods, and put the vortec heads and intake from the 305 onto the 350. hopefully your still with me so far.

I am going to have the block bored out .030 over and the heads cleaned and inspected with new valve stem seals put in. is there anything special i need to modify to make this work properly, and has anyone on here actually done this build before? I know its kind of mickey moused, but with the amount of money i am given to play with, it seems to be my only alternative. thanks for any help.

Mike

Why not just buy a long block crate motor? By the time you get the block bored, get new pistons and everything else (rings, bearings, etc.) it will probably be about as much, won't it? Then if the heads are no good, you got to replace them- more money.

He put a junkyard motor in it once, why not go that route again? That will save him some money, and give him his vehicle back in running condition until he can save enough to rebuild one of the many blown motors. He can probably find a 4.8 V6 cheapest, then save up $2500 for a brand spanking new LS2 =]

350 SBC w/ 290HP, $2k

that would be awesome, if it werent for the fact that around here the cheapest decent motor (junkyard) is about $1200 for a motor with 150k or more. anything 149k and less was over $1400. trust me we tried all the options. the heads have been verified good, and im getting the complete kit with all new pistons etc. for under 300. my guy at the machine shop is gonna do all the work on the block and heads for under 200. thats why im going this route. just let me know if any of you have any other advice for me. thanks.

they will sell any v8 motor regardless of condition, miles, etc
