I picked up a hunting truck "Harry" it was full of dog hair when I got it and the kids named it, anyhow its burning alot of oil, no leaks just burning, I went 500 miles and was down 3 quarts, Anyone give me an idea on the cost of a ring job? Compression seems to be good but you can smell the burning oil when you stop. Anyhelp would be appreciated

Engines run so long anymore that by the time they need rings they need a lot more like boring, pistons, valveguides, ect. To get an estimate go to some shops in your area. If its just a beater you might consider a used engine.

I bought a '95 silverado with 80K miles and it's having the same problem. I can't find a leak, but i'm losing oil somewhere. Just had an oil change, but 30 days later I had to add three quarts to see a measureable level on the dip stick. Could this be a problem with this year/make??

well guys the trucks are 16 years old.. lol what do u expect? my 95 will start burning a little if you dont change the oil at around 4500k miles but then again i think anything will. might wanna try thicker oil??? i had a ol 77 ford that burned oil real bad i put some 10w-50 and it still burned it..but not as much

gotstylez is right they are just old, now before you go and buy new engines or tear them down for a rebuild take a compression test, if compression is around 150 all the way around, it could just be the valve seals or worn guides
