Default 1997 chevy 1500 silverado rear end fill plug damaged

I was wondering if any of you could give me some tips on getting my rear end fill plug off so i can change my fluid. It is badly rusted and the ratchet hole to stick a 3/8ths ratchet is stripped.

I was thinking about using a screw extractor but didnt know what size or if it would work any tips?

Brush it carefully with a wire brush to expose what little thread is accessible. Clean it with a sharp nail or something. Apply liquid wrench, tap, repeat. This would take a large screw extractor, if you can't get it to loosen up. Or you can drill the plug, use a smaller screw extractor(also get chips of metal in your gear oil) and buy a new fill plug.

What's your time worth? Why not just get a new diff cover complete with new bolt? You can even paint it some cool color. Some even come chromed.

thanks guys i followed what you sait i had a build up of hard rust material all in the plug hole so i cleaned that out real good and finaly got enough thread near the botom to hold a 3/8ths 3 inch extension tight enough to loosen it.

pb blaster and that helped alot i took the cover off and it didnt have no paint left on it so i steel wooled it clean and painted it black looks real nice and added a new fill plug that isnt stipped.

thank you for the tips they worked.
