Default 1997 Trans Issue. Please Help

Hi everyone. I just tonight picked up a 1997 Silverado 1500 z71 with 181,000 mi on it. Everything is perfect and I love it except for one thing

Reverse isn't working right. Reverse works sometimes perfect and when you get it in it is perfect but gettting it into reverse is the problem

I put it in reverse I give it gas it grinds I throw it in neutral. Stop the grinding. Put it in park then back to reverse it works perfect. Sometimes it will work perfect the first time. Im just looking for some help from someone. If I can't get good help or figure it out on my own I'm talking it to the transmission shop. I really don't want to do that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

He is correct your gonna want it looked at real fast its probably not what you want to hear but usually when a transmission is in the early stages of going out it will typically drop reverse then 1st after that its a whole new tranny you might be able to get it rebuilt now. and you wanna hold on to that truck 97 was a great year for these trucks mine has 190 thousand and runns as strong as it did new
