First of all I would like to say that I am obviously new to the forums here and that I chose this particular forum because you all seem to know and really care about your trucks.

That being said, I have a situation that I would like some opinions on.

I'm looking at a sweet pewter 2000 Silverado 2500 6.0L 4X4 with 73k on it... since the 2500's are exempt from EPA standards, I couldn't find the average mpg on any official website. Owners of the 2500 6.0's what do you get for milage without towing?

I know it's going to be downright terrible, but I don't care. If I wanted good mpg... I'd buy a prius. I'm still in high school so I don't have a long commute anyways... basically about 3 miles to school and about 6 to work.

Since I'm still considered a risky driver to insure (17, but no tickets whatsoever, good student discount) are these trucks pretty expensive to ensure, especially the 4X4 ones?

If you check my profile you'll see that I live in Des Moines, Iowa and it snows like there's no tomorrow up here. I really don't plan on using this for any heavy towing, I just have always loved the look and ride of chevy trucks. Considering the truck won't see any off roading or towing, can I expect it to last a long time or can I look forward to some problems?

Not sure if you guys would know, but they are asking 13,000 (From a dealership) for the truck... reasonable? Unlike a lot of teenagers, I would be paying for the whole cost of the truck myself, so getting a good deal is really important.

I think you have the right idea about the gas millage, It won't be anything to brag about. If you have a light foot and resist the temptation to feel the thrust when you start from a light, You could expect around 13 or 14 MPG. That would be similiar to a carburetedGMC 2500 with a 350. I had a 72 bought new for$3200. Since then I have bought a 91 Chev/2500with a 454, then a 97 Chev 2500 with a 454, and I now have a 2002 Chev 2500/8.1, My present truck is by far the best truck I have ever driven. I tow a heavy 5th wheel about 5-10K per year. Gas mileage all depends on your R. foot, within a range. That sweet 2000 pewter sounds like a truck to be real proud, of especially for a 17 year old. I can't really comment on the price of the truck, or what the insurance will cost. I have never had any major problems with any of my GM products. The 72 GMC had 267K when my son took it, the 91 had 147K, traded in on the 97, and drove it 140K. Now my 2002 has 88K and no problems whatsoever, except the passenger door window went belly up. On my 2002 I can get 12-13 MPG solo, and towing my heavy (22000K lbs TCW) I get about 10 MPG with a light foot. Hope I have given you some insight on what to expect from the sweet 2000 Silverado.
