Default 2001 Silverado Z71 keyless entry

I suspect this has been brought up in the past, my apologies for those of you that have seen this so many times before.

So my teenage son bought the subject truck with no key fob for lock/unlock of the vehicle. I purchased two new fobs. I followed the instructions to program the fobs. I attempted more than 30 times, uhg. Still not functional. I noticed that the security light was lit up on the instrument cluster. How likely is it that this is illuminated due to what I think is called a "pass lock"? He does not have a chipped key.

I have reached out to the company I purchased the fobs from with no definitive answer.

I am not familiar with pass lock. If there is anyone that has good advice , I really would appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

search gm passlock 2 as this is the system used for that year. the ignition lock cylinder houses the passlock resistor. the key is just a mechanical cut that turns the lock cylinder.

so the truck doesn't start now?
what procedure are you using to program the key fob?try this:

Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Programming
  1. Start with the ignition OFF, hold down the power unlock button on the door panel. Turn ignition key ON, OFF, ON, OFF. Release power unlock button on the door panel. The locks will cycle once.
  2. Hold down the keyless entry transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 15 seconds. The locks will again cycle once.
  3. Repeat step #2 for each additional keyless entry transmitter.
  4. Turn the ignition on to exit the keyless entry transmitter programming mode. Programming is now complete.

The truck does start and runs without issues.

I am using the exact method you wrote out for programming.

if it starts and runs; there is no passlock problem. passlock will not effect fob programming.

try to program it using the scan tool method...take it to a shop.
