Default 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8L 4x4

My room mate has a 2003 silverado that I'm completely stumped on. People are telling me it's the transmission thats shot, but I refuse to believe that as the truck has other symptoms...

I'm not to familiar with chevy trucks as I like my Dodges' but, to say the least:
the truck will shift fine from 1st to 2nd, but when it goes to shift from 2nd to 3rd, it feels like the tranny is either slipping, entering "limp mode", or that its downshifting into 1st gear, and will not enter 3rd gear until you force the motor to 5500RPM. The daytime running lights do not turn on anymore, and the speedo stopped working. All these symptoms lead me to believe the speed sensor is out. We went to the local parts store and they told us there were 2 different speed sensors, the input, and the output. They didnt have the input sensor, so we replace the output sensor on the back of the transfer case. This however did not solve the problem. When shifting into 4hi or 4lo, the transfer case clunks louder than normal.

now what I am wondering is, is it true that there is an input and output vss? If so, where is the input vss located? We havent been able to get our hands on a code scanner, so we are kinda shooting it in the dark, old school style. But regardless, if the code scanner told us it was the input vss, we still have no idea where it is located :P

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advance!

I can offer some input on that speedo. Ive got an 03 chevy 4.8 with a stick so I'm not sure on the tranny issue but chevy's have a tendency to have their spedometers stick, esp. when hot. The only fix for that is to replace but again you'll probably encounter the same thing after time.
