Default 2003 Silverado LS auto transmission 1st gear problems

Bought this vehicle back in '04 and it has always had a hard 'thunk' when shifting from 1st to 2nd and I thought, well, maybe it just shifts hard, but this weekend a new condition has occurred. Now it sticks in 1st gear and will stay there at very high rpms, unless I back off the accellerator and then pump the gas to coax it into shifting to 2nd. There are no problems once in 2nd, although the oil pressure gauge is pegged at max all the time. I've driven it about 8 hours since this first started.

Any suggestions or similar stories are appreciated. I'll bring it in if I need to, but if it is something like a pump or filter or anything else I may be able to save a few hundred dollars on by doing it myself, I'm game.

Thanks!

Default RE: 2003 Silverado LS auto transmission 1st gear problems

I have a 2004 silverado crew cab Z71 LS and it is doing something very similar. It has been shifting very hard from 1 - 2 and but only does it when driving with moderate power. If very light on the gas or very hard it doesn't do it. I just had the transmission serviced today (flushed) and it is still doing it. I have 68,000 miles on the truck and I am the second owner. I really like the truck but really hope my transmission is not going out....

I've searched the forum and can't find an answer - seen some similar questions but in higher gears.

Mine seems to be almost like a clutch slipping and then it engages really hard with a thump and only happens from first to second gears. It does seem to be getting worse.......

My wifes' 2003 2wd Tahoe LT is going on Friday to have the torque converter replaced but her truck was producing a high speed transmission slip code. I guess when it rains it pours..and I'm off on Friday for a 2,000 mile round trip hunting trip to Missouri....
