Default 2005 chevy transmission problem

i have a 2005 silverado crew cab z71 auto trans.
i was driving down the road about 40 mph. all of a sudden its like its in neutral. so i shift it down to 3rd and it works fine. i go about 1/4 mile and let off the gas to turn, when i give gas again, same thing.
so i shift to 2nd. 2nd works fine.
once i get started in 2nd i can shift to 3rd and it will work most of the time.
while driving i put it into 4wd high, once it engaged i shifted to drive and it started working. while in drive i go back to 2wd and it keeps working. i only did that once. i only drove about 5 miles since this has happened. i backed out of drive way, put it into 2nd, it made a few noises and then stopped. other than that there were no strange noises, just no drive or third gear unless i go through steps.
i checked transmission fluid and the level looked fine.
If anyone can shed any light on this i would really appreciate it.
Thanks

First order of business is to pull the codes to see what is going on.

Check engine light is not on.
So would a regular code puller do this?
