I currently have a 2000 Ford F150 that I use to tow my 25' 5th wheel. OK for flat surfaces but a bummer going up hills. So I have decided to go to a diesel truck.

I know very little about Ford, Chevy, Dodge, GMC diesel models, and like all things new I need to build up my knowledge base on the subject.

I am looking at possibly getting a Silverado 2500HD. Does the HD in the name indicate that the truck is diesel?

No, the HD stands for heave duty. If you are looking for diesel trucks you should look for Duramax (chevy/GMC) Powerstroke (ford) and Cummings (dodge). The Duramax is an excellent diesel and they are attached to the Allison transmission.

if for some reason you decide to get a powerstroke make sure you stick to a very good maintenance schedule or you'll regret it

I'd stick with a Chevy or Dodge. Ford lost the Powerstroke contract but kept the trade marked name and are making motors in-house. Not sure how "good" the Ford motors will hold up.

No, it just means that its heavy duty. If it says Duramax on the truck, then it's diesel.

Don't go for Dodge, they have all kinds of problems. My buddy has a Dodge Diesel truck and he went through 3 transmissions in 2 months. You need to go with Chevy, it's your best bet. Chevy is alittle more expensive but it's worth it. Dodge has electrical problems, transmission problems, but has the best diesel engine. Ford is good, my dad drives a 2010 Ford F-350 Fx4 Super Duty and he pulls a 42' trailer and it does pertty good. But recently it's been acting up and blowing smoke and losing power. Ford has the best chassis but if you crash a ford, you have to get a bunch of Inter coolers replaced. You'll want a Chevy 2500HD Duramax and preferrably a 4x4.
