So I'm lingering around 187k on my truck right now. I know my motor will probably need to either be rebuilt or replaced by 280k (I hope it will last longer but I'm a pessimist) so I'm wondering what you guys (yankee talk) or yall (my talk) think. When the inevitable happens should I stick with my 305 and rebuild it, buy another 305, switch to a 350, or go stroker, etc. If I go with the rebuild on my 305, should I go for the 400 crank? What kind of extra power would that see? Or would it be better power wise and economically speaking to just go 350? Or should I just build a 383? I do have a vortec 350 block that came out of my uncle's 1999 pickup. I'm for sure never going 454 so don't mention it. Big blocks are over rated IMO. But I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks. I am very pleased with my 305 right now and it shows no signs of problems but weird things have happened to me before.

Well since it's a dd, I was thinking 350. Do I really have to do anything to the computer? They are basically the same motor, just different bore. Did you try driving it with the 305 settings? I guess a computer from a 350 pickup with work for mine. It should be a direct swap, motor and computer wise, eh (canadian talk)?

I didnt do anything with the wiring, TBI, Or computer i drove it with the 305 settings it was doggy so i had the dealer reflash the computer and put a superchip in it and it was so much better, then i put a roller cam, stainless steel valves, roller lifters, and roller rockers in it and it was even better.

It depends. I'm a MPG guy, when I have to start looking at a new drivetrain, I'm thinking the 5.3L with the new six-speed transmission. The 6.0L is great, but IMO, since I don't haul a lot of heavy loads, I can probably get away with maybe even a 4.8L.
But if you're a Horsepower type of guy, you could do a lot worse than a 350, and as stated previously, it's the same block. All you have to do is reprogram the computer with the new engine size, and the PCM does the rest.
