I completely agree with that. I would never replace something like this without testing it first.

Both transmissions I bought were used, not rebuilt.
I drove the truck with each one in limp mode before I fixed my vss wire. Aamco found that problem, and they seem to think it is the transmission now. I was thinking I burnt them both up because I drove with the vss failure. I do not know how to check the wiring harness. I have unplugged the power to the tranny, and it still takes off in drive. Does this mean I do have 3rd gear?

The wiring harness looks good, as far as I can see. The prongs all look okay, and none of the holes are clogged on the harness.. I have been using the same little black switch box, the one around the shifter, do those things go bad?
And I do have a multimeter but I don't know where to begin on testing...
I'm glad you guys replied, I was about to take out a loan and buy a rebuilt tranny. Still might have to...

Ya think? If however, you are refering to the PRNDL switch, CLEAR THE CODES, DRIVE THE TRUCK UNTIL THE PROBLEM SETS AND THEN READ THE FRESH CODES!
This is step one of a simple diagnostic proceedure that will tell us exactly what is wrong with your truck.

With the wiring harness unplugged, it should go into failsafe mode, which would be 3rd gear. When you take off from a dead stop, you can tell if it's in 3rd gear.

As far as testing the pins, here's a diagram that can help you out. Check pin B first, which is the second pin from the top, starting from the left looking into the case connector right-side up.
