Default 4wd issues on 2000 Sierra

I bought my 2000 Sierra Z71 4x4 and the 4wd worked. Then the transmission exploded on me and it went to the shop. They put in a new tranny and gave it back to me. But now my 4wd doesn't work.

The front wheels wont spin when in 4wd. And the light that says 4x4 on the dash doesn't come on. When I shift it between 2wd, 4hi, N, and 4Lo it feels like it is going into gear. When its in N it doesn't move, so thats working right.
When I put it into 4Lo it does change the gearing of the rear wheels, as my rpms are higher than normal, but the front wheels just wont spin.

Do you think the shop forgot to plug in some wire or vacuum hose? Or is it something more serious?

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have a jack and a bit of mechanical experience, so tell me what to try!

Thanks!

Have you tried taking it back to the shop where you had the work done and explaining it to them? Maybe they left something minor disconnected until the job was paid for, and in your case, forgot to hook it up after it was paid for.

Check that they reconnected the front axle actuator. Whether in 4H or 4L, an electric signal is sent to the actuator to engage the front wheels.

I suggested that to your father on 9/13 in a thread he posted about his son's truck. Glad it worked out for you but a post in the original thread would have been nice so I could have known I sent you in the right direction.
Again, glad you figured it out.

Mudmaniac,
I just saw that you had posted in my dads thread. I didn't even know my dad had started a thread. Been pretty busy the last couple of weeks. I haven't had a chance to look at the truck, so the problem is still there. I hope to get some time later this week to get under it and see if I can find a loose wire or something.

I appreciate your help and will keep you updated on how it all turns out.
Thanks!
Matt
