Default 5.3 performance upgrades

I recently purchased a bone stock 2006 Silverado reg. cab 5.3 2wd 119,000 mileage. The only thing I have done to it is change the oil with royal purple and put a fram oil filter on it. I really want to max out performance in acceleration and get more HP and MPG. I was considering getting a spectre cold air intake in a few days, I was just wondering what would be the best ways of getting faster without spending thousands.

If you really want to boost the performance of your rig, you must have the budget. Headers and exhaust are just upgrades to boost the power your rig.

longtube headers and off road y-pipe, intake, custom tune is a good start. don't forget transmission upgrades as more power will roast one very quickly. I'd do a hd-2 transgo shift kit, vette servo, trucool transmission cooler, and a 2600-2800 stall converter for better performance. Truck will be totally different
