Default 700R4 help

I just picked up a K-10 that has according to the owner a blown 700R4. Says he was mudding with it when the kick down cable some how came loose and burnt it up.

He was not home when I picked it up but for poops and giggles I threw it into gear to see what would happen and ended up driving It onto the trailer not having to winch it up. Get it home to unload it and it has no reverse. Drive it around the yard today and it won't shift out of first gear. I'm a firm believer that automatic transmissions work off elfin magic and witch craft, so can any one give me some idea of what it's issue is? I'm hoping that there is maybe some linkage or some easy fix to get it back in shape. In first gear it doesn't seem to slip or have any other issue. Some one out here has to be a 700r4 expert. Please give me some good news!

First things first,

Check the oil to make sure it hasn't leaked down when that TV cable came unhooked.

No, it will not upshift if the cable is unhooked by design....that's the good news.

Bad news is that reverse. If it's full of oil/clean filter and won't back up, she's fried. Check the oil to see if it's black.

'Nother good news is that the kit is only $200.

Jim, it is not a kick down cable. That cable controls the flow of transfluid to the cluch packs. As Allen recommended, check the fluid, if it is black, don't waste your time, you will need a new trans. If you decide to remove and install a new one yourself, make sure you review how to adjust the TBI cable. It must be adjusted TIGHT or you will just burn your new 700r4 up.
