Default 71 chevy wtf???

so i was goin to pic up my gf for prom in a 71 chevy with im assuming an early 80s 350 and....it dies straight up no spit no sputter. ive replaced plugs cap button ignition coil and that little module under the button on the distributer. buddy of mine thinks that the points are bad...this is my first carb vehicle so idk what points are. he says a new distributer will fix it so i was wonderin if anybody here had any input....it tries to turn over but gets no spark so yea any help would be appreciated

Points were part of the old distributors before HEI, by the sounds of what you have replaced you dont have points. Which little module under the distributor button did you replace? The pick up coil is usualy the one that leaves you stranded. To replace this you have to remove the distributor from the truck and take the gear off the bottom of the distributor. Make sure u marj the distributor housing in relation to the intake manifold and the rotor button in relation to the housing before you remove it.

well idk if it was the ignition coil per se, the coil i replaced was the one that sits on top of the distributor cap and the module was about three inches long with 2 prongs on each end and it was slightyly curved.

you replaced the ignition module. Now you need to go buy a pick up coil and replace it.

pickup coil is what the green and yellow wire in distributor go to. the coil itself sits around the shaft of distributor, right under the rotor mounting. it doesn't look like an ignition coil. this is an example, tho yours may vary ever so slightly:

good stuff ill see about gettin one of em tomorrow. im tryin not to put too much in it right now but i dont think my gfs dad wants it sittin in his driveway forever.
