My son had a starter go out on his 89 C1500. To replace the starter he removed the clutch slave cylinder, replaced the starter, and put the slave back on. That's when I got into the picture. It still wasn't starting. He told me that the clutch didn't feel right. Sure enough the clutch pedal would only go about half way. I figured he didn't get the slave cylinder back on properly. While underneath the car with me, he explained that in order to put the slave cylinder back on he had to push the rod into the clutch housing. Apparently in doing this he didn't have the push rod positioned properly between the slave and the end of the clutch fork assembly. We got it back together properly and the clutch was able to be pushed the whole way in, and the car started fine. With the access plug removed you can see that the rod is pushing against the end of the fork and depresses when the clutch pedal is pushed.

The problem now, is that it won't go into gear when the engine is running. We tried bleeding the clutch slave cylinder to no avail.

Any ideas? He said he had no problems getting the truck into gear before replacing the starter. I suppose it's possible that the slave cylinder went out, but it isn't leaking.

if it is grinding, u may need a new slave cyl

 

Thought about replacing the slave cylinder, but the pair was replaced last year and it seemed way to coincidental that the clutch or slave would go out when replacing the starter.

After reading a few threads on C1500 clutch master/slave cylinder bleeding adventures, we decided to give it another try. After bleeding about 10oz of brake fluid through the lines it finally went into gear after a few pumps on the clutch pedal. It's been working fine ever since.
