93 Silverado side mirror movement

My 93 Silverado had the chrome side mirrors that will fold toward the door if they would make contact with another object when the truck is moving. The trouble is that the force of the air pushing on the back of the mirror when traveling at highway speed causes them to move toward the door and no longer be useful. I took the base apart and inserted a small piece of tough plastic (piece of a motor oil bottle) in the bracket that holds the round shaft, as a shim to tighten the grip, but that was not enough to solve the issue. The parts are not worn in any visible way. Obviously, to prevent breakage from an impact, they should not be completly tight. Has anyone solved this problem? Did they mirrors have this problem when brand new (were they even designed correctly)?
