as far as tranny not shifting right, or starting in 1st, i'd suspect fluid level/condition, filter condition, and possibly the detent cable (from throttle body to trans) this cable has a certain adjustment it needs.

for the gauges, only other thing i could think would be a ground issue somewhere. the speedo gets a signal from the computer, which gets its signal from the trans. the tach gets its signal ultimately from the coil, by way of the computer. maybe check the backside of gauge panel where it plugs in, make sure connectors are ok.

i have a 98 and the speedo quit also, i first replaced the VSS vehicle speed sensor located on the back of the transfer case, that didnt fix mine and i ended up getting a whole cluster out of the junk yard. If you truck has the 4l60e transmission, you wont have a detent or TV throttle valve cable, the 4l60e is electronicly controlled and part of the signal it uses is from the VSS.

no it did not stay in 3rd gear. Is your fluid at the correct level while hot, wipe the dipstick on a white napkin, is it cherry red or brown, does it smell burnt.
