On my sons '98 K1500 with the 5.7 Vortec he is having trouble with his fuel pressure, it has a practically new Carter fuel pump. According to my Chiltons manual it says there is supposed to be a hose hooked to the Fuel pressure regulator, you can see it in the above picture without a hose hooked to it, when he took off his plentum to install a new regulator his doesn't have a hose hooked to it, is it supposed to have one or not? If so where does it go to from the regulator, there's not an unhooked hose in there to hook up.

 

vortecs don't have a hose to regulator. i did the same injector conversion on my tahoe few months ago, ran into same thing. found out there isn't a hose.

 

No hose. New fuel pump does not mean good. Unless it was a Delco or Delphi pump there is a good chance it is bad. Everything else has almost a 100% failure rate.

Are you sure about the Carters? From what I have researched they are some of the best out there. I agree with you on the cheapies on Ebay and O'reilly's such as an Air-Tex.

 

What is the problem? There are ways to pinpoint a bad pump or regulator

Sometimes when he trys to start it in the morning, he has to cycle the key on/off several times to get it to start. If it's just overnight sometimes it will fire right up, but if it has sat for a few days it's a lot worse. With it having a new fuel pump we figured that was the only other thing that could cause it.

 

That is typical GM truck fuel pump description. If the regulator was leaking the fuel out the truck would smoke (black) when it started and it would run terrible for up to 30 seconds after it starts. Put a Delco pump in and it will be fixed.

 

So the regulator will never starve it for pressure, it only keeps it from having too much? And that's why it would black smoke is because of it having too much pressure?
